What Does “LGBTQIA2S+ Therapy” and “Queer Affirming Therapy” Actually Mean?
Living as a queer person brings a unique set of challenges and immense joys. Without a thorough understanding of this lived experience, a clinician may unknowingly be missing moments of healing and connection, and worse, could actually perpetuate harmful narratives passed down from supremacy culture.
This is why working with a queer identifying and affirming therapist can be a powerful step in your healing journey. Because a queer identity can impact every element of our lives - how we show love, how we dress, who we feel safe around - it is important to work with a therapist who can understand the nuances of a queer life. In our work together, I will get curious about where our sense of self stems from a larger system of oppression. Where do we feel shame because others have told us we “should”? Where do we make ourselves smaller because someone else was uncomfortable? I understand it because I lived it. Now, it is my life’s passion to work with other queer folks working for not only a more joyful and present life, but also a more joyful and safe world.
What might we work on in queer affirming therapy?
Unlearning
Challenging and letting go of harmful narratives from our families, society, religion, etc. in order to make more space for what feels more authentic and truthful!
Values Work
What truly matters to you? How can we make more space for those things, regardless of what is on your plate? We do not have to wait for the world to be fully fixed in order to live our most aligned life.
Celebration and Community
Together, we can uplift and honor everything it means to be queer and all the queer ancestors who have fought for justice. How might we continue carrying their torch forward?
And so much more!
Whatever you bring up in queer affirming therapy is welcome! We will make space for whatever is present for you.
